“But build it? Why on earth would I want to do that?”
I’ll explain why in just a moment, but first let me tell you a short story….
It was a warm sunny day, in January of 2007. I was at an RV resort in Verde Valley, Arizona. The air was fresh and clean. All was peaceful and quiet. My wife and I had just finished lunch. As I leaned back in my chair, under the shade of the nearby tree, my little pug Choo-Choo slept in my lap.
I thought “life is good”.
I was quickly approaching my retirement in 2008. I smiled inside as I reflected on the last 30 years of my involvement with personal computers. It’s been a magnificent trip!
I had learned a lot about computer building! During the past 24 years I had personally built hundreds! For myself, as well as friends, relatives and clients! From DOS through Vista. From Novell through Windows Server Editions.
And my 9 year computer dealership had built and sold nearly 4,000 units.
“But I’m not ready to retire!” my brain shot back.
I reasoned, even in retirement, I felt like I would be doing a great dishonor if I didn’t share that experience and knowledge with others. I feel it’s my duty.
But more importantly, it is also my duty to alert people to the importance of moving into “greener” computing.
How you buy, or build, and use a computer has a surprising effect on our environment.
And it’s clearly evident the environment needs all the help it can get!
Then and there, I decided to develop Computer Building Seminars and Coaching Programs. Personal. Green. It has become my mission.
So now you know why I’m teaching and coaching!
Now, why should you build your own computer?
Here’s how Steve Keating, Audio Visual Engineer at a major Las Vegas resort, explains it:

Now, before you buy a new computer, or upgrade your present one, you should read this.
It could change the way you think about your PC!

When you build your own computer, you gain a unique understanding of the technology from the inside-out. Some of the mystery fades away. You realize “if I can build it, I can fix it!” You discover where to look for potential problems. And where not to. By learning through this on-going process, you become more responsible and confident, and less reliant on others for technical support.

A store-bought computer will never be the same as the one you lovingly build with your own hands. The thrill of building something. The excitement of figuring out how things really work, making choices, figuring out components and configurations.
No one on an assembly line building a portion of a computer, likely a hundred times a day, day after day, will take personal loving care of the process like you will. And you can’t blame them. It’s “just a job”.
To you, it’s your creation. It’s your pride and joy! (And just teaching you is my pride and joy!)

Wondering how to actually build a computer?
May I share a description of the process? Pull up a chair. Consider the main components. The Aluminum case, power supply, motherboard with integrated video, RAM, CPU and cooler, hard drive, CD/DVD burner. Then the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Not so bad, huh.
Begin with installing the power supply in the case. 4 screws. Install the CD/DVD burner in the case. 4 screws. Install the hard drive. 4 screws. Prepare the motherboard by dropping in the CPU. Snap the cooling fan on top of the CPU. Snap in two memory modules. Install the prepared motherboard into the case. 9 screws. You will need some dexterity here, since the screws are small. Connect the wires.
There you have it!
Really, there's a lot of patience and interesting precautions along the way. Mishandle static-sensitive devices like the RAM or CPU, and you might as well chuck them in the garbage can. If you screw the motherboard down too tightly, it may crack. Now you have about $300 in the garbage can.
But don't worry.
I've personally built hundreds over the years. Just follow my steps in the manual and you will be fine.
The fact is, almost anyone can build their own computer!


Even Dell, HP and others are now coming out with their versions of GREEN PCs.
Obviously, they recognize the importance. But these machines are highly proprietary. Difficult to upgrade.
(Translation: fodder for landfill!)
Certainly, you like the idea of saving energy, even if it’s just by one green computer at a time. The fact is, it all adds up and makes a difference.
And certainly, everyone likes saving money, even small amounts, on their energy bill.
Now it’s time for my confession.
I haven’t always been committed to “green”.
I even have a motorhome. But it’s a diesel, and it gets better mileage than some SUVs. It also has solar panels. So the only time it uses a lot of energy, is when going from point “A” to point “B”.
But we’re talking about computers.
I used to delight in building the hottest (literally), biggest and fastest computers I could afford. I taught many others the same thing. I was responsible for wasting a lot of energy. I truly feel bad about that. And now I want to do something to reverse that waste-mentality. Not sure if it’s my age, compiled wisdom or guilt.
Really, it’s just the right thing to do.
Not everyone needs a power-sucking fire-breathing computer (gamers excluded). For the most part, an efficient 500 Watt power supply is plenty. Couple that with a “green” motherboard and sensible graphics.
And not everyone needs an inefficient $400 good-for-one-year computer either.
It’s time to be sensible. Making a difference, one computer at a time.
